Most women past 40 are not choosing to put themselves last. They have spent two decades putting everyone else first by default, and somewhere along the way, taking care of themselves became whatever time and money was left over after the kids, the job, and the household got handled first.

Coaches Marilynn, Tijana, and Jordanna break down five specific ways to reverse that pattern, and the throughline is that investing in yourself after 40 builds the body, the time, and the mental space to actually enjoy this decade instead of just getting through it.

Here's what they cover:

  • The mindset shift that happens after 40, and why "I've been on the back burner" is the most common thing clients say before they change anything

  • Why hiring a fitness coach beats piecing together advice from podcasts, magazines, and whatever worked in your 20s

  • Buying back your time through grocery delivery, meal prep services, and outsourcing domestic tasks like house cleaning

  • The actual ROI math behind paying someone else to do the things that drain you

  • Botox, skincare, and wardrobe as part of feeling good in your own skin

  • Mental load, and why therapy, mindset coaching, and journaling belong on the list of things worth paying for

  • Learning to say no as a full sentence, and why open time on your calendar is not the same as available time

  • Investing in joy through travel, hobbies, and time with people who aren't asking you for anything

Jordanna shares a stat that's worth paying attention to. Women working outside the home carry 73% of the mental load of running that home, on top of the job itself. That number doesn't move because you get better at time management. It moves when you start offloading things on purpose.

"You don't need anybody's permission. It's you making the choice and saying, I am putting myself on the front burner.” - Coach Tijana

If you've spent years telling yourself your turn is coming once the kids are older, once things calm down, once there's more time, this episode is the push to stop waiting. Applications are open atgetsculpted.ca/contact.

The unedited podcast transcript for this episode of the Get Sculpted podcast follows:

Tijana [00:00:00]: Let's get sculpted. Hello and welcome back to the Get Sculpted podcast. I'm here with my lovely co-hosts, Jordanna and Marilynn. Hello, ladies.

Jordanna [00:00:08]: Hello.

Marilynn [00:00:09]: Hello.

Tijana [00:00:10]: It is good to be back because today we have a great topic. As always, I always lead with that, but it's always a good one. And this one is not about the nutrition tips or the fitness tips. We're gonna talk about an important mindset shift that happens after 40. And I think with a lot of the ladies we talk to, and I know you ladies are over 40, I'm not there yet, But most of our clients are. And the number one thing I've heard is like, you know, you just stop tolerating a lot of things, right? You realize, oh yeah, I've been putting up with too much. I've been pleasing people too much. And honestly, the common denominator is I've been on the back burner.

Tijana [00:00:44]: You guys hear that a lot from your clients, right?

Jordanna [00:00:46]: Absolutely. Almost everyone.

Marilynn [00:00:48]: Definitely. I even say that right now I'm in my no era.

Tijana [00:00:51]: Good. And it seems like it's not like the first era, right? It's like you kind of always come back to it and You know, by default we can wanna people please, but the main thing we wanna focus on now is that if you're at this life stage, you probably have kids who are growing up. Maybe they're in sports, you live a busy life. Maybe your kids are even outta the house soon. But at this point, it's really important that you start thinking, what does it look like to put myself back on the front burner? And that starts with investing in yourself, which is what we're gonna talk about. Investing your money, yes, but also your time.

Jordanna [00:01:21]: Mm-hmm.

Tijana [00:01:22]: And your energy. And this is really gonna be for the woman who's done putting everyone else first, and she's done shrinking herself to fit the needs of others. So we're gonna talk about 5 specific ways that you're gonna invest in yourself after 40 that is gonna elevate your fitness and your life and how you operate every single day. All right, so Jord, why don't you kick us off?

Investing in Your Fitness: Why You Need a Coach After 40

Jordanna [00:01:44]: Investing in your fitness, the first one I'm gonna talk about, is such a big piece. And we, we kind of all touch on this in different ways, but I do wanna say like, you should wanna look good because when you look good, you feel good. But in the frame that we're talking about today, it is really about the longevity and the quality of life that is going to make the difference for you in your 40s and beyond between aging and thriving and how you feel in this stage of life. You really need to be able to invest in the skills and the mindset shift to help you get there in a more streamlined way. Because it, it is true, like the information is somewhat out there, AI is around, different tools and resources are there, but you do need somebody with, I think, lived experience. I think a community. I think that personal touch of things is what is the difference maker today.

Tijana [00:02:39]: I've had a lot of conversations of women who like are kind of new to fitness, if you will, or if they dabbled in it. And I think that people really underestimate how much of an active process it is to get in shape. And I'm not saying you have to overhaul your whole life and you have to dedicate like training like a bodybuilder, but I think a lot of women will dabble in like, yeah, I've been strength training. Yeah. And they're not really like lifting heavy. They've just kind of gone their whole life coasting along and doing what they've always done. That is not enough.

Marilynn [00:03:03]: Yeah.

Tijana [00:03:04]: To build the kind of muscle that's not only gonna make you look good, but like you said, Jord, that's actually gonna make you age as well as you wanna age. Like that takes intention and that's what you get from investing in yourself.

Jordanna [00:03:14]: Exactly. And so what does this actually look like in practice? It is hiring a coach who understands your body, your stage of life, and your goals.

Marilynn [00:03:24]: Us.

Jordanna [00:03:25]: The second one can be committing to a structured program rather than winging it at the gym and hoping for the best. This is what you were speaking about, T, like you need that structure, you need the intentionality, you need a level of intensity that maybe Maybe you could get away with not having in the past, but now you need that. And prioritizing the strength training piece is probably the single most important part of this because you do need that muscle mass because that's what's going to give you, like you said, T, the shape, but it's also going to give you the longevity. The other things that investing in your fitness give you is that it takes away the decision fatigue. I don't know about you girls, but I talk to women all the time and they're just like, Mm-hmm. I don't know how I'm going to add another thing to my plate of like taking care of myself and making all these decisions and having all these other things to do. Well, guess what? Investing in the coach is actually taking decisions off of your plate. You don't have to think about what to do in the gym.

Jordanna [00:04:21]: You don't have to think about what to prepare for your meals. You don't have to think about, you know, what piece of the puzzle are you not getting? Like, the structured process is there for a reason in order to take those decisions off of your plate and reduce the number of things that you're doing so that it's actually quite focused. Right. And that's where the relationship with your coach becomes super important.

Tijana [00:04:42]: Yeah, I was, I was just gonna go on like a little mini rant about when people, I love when they're like, I don't need a coach. And I'm like, okay, so you're definitely not an expert in this field. And I'm sure anyone would admit that, right? It's like, why would you wanna spend your free time like podcasting? Like, of course our podcast is valuable, keep listening to it. But like I'm saying, just piecing together things from just, you know, this source and that source and this magazine and this podcast. Listening to these things so you can make your own plan when somebody already has that knowledge and system and you can literally just show up and be like, wow, I'm pulled in a million different directions, but in this realm of my life, I just execute. Like, I don't understand why you wouldn't want that. It's a no-brainer.

Marilynn [00:05:19]: Well, and I, and I think also like you have to get really real with yourself. Like, how's that been working for you?

Tijana [00:05:23]: Exactly.

Marilynn [00:05:23]: Like you're at this stage of life, you're in your 40s, 50s, and you're not where you wanna be. And now we're at this stage of life where it's more important than ever But how's that been working for you navigating alone and trying to piecemeal things? It just doesn't make sense. Yes.

Tijana [00:05:35]: The consistency won't help.

Marilynn [00:05:36]: It doesn't make sense.

Jordanna [00:05:37]: And being the lone wolf is not exactly how women thrive anyway. We thrive in community, we thrive with support. And so doing it by yourself really isn't going to get you where you want to be. And also think about the pace, like doing it yourself might take you 2 years to figure it out and find the groove.

Marilynn [00:05:54]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:05:54]: But doing it in community, doing it with the right support is gonna get you there in half the amount of time.

Marilynn [00:05:59]: That's right.

Tijana [00:06:00]: At least.

Jordanna [00:06:01]: Yeah. The other piece that we've been speaking about is that we're all kind of saying without saying specifically is the expertise side of things. This is exactly why women do come to us is because you're not just getting your one-on-one coach, but you're getting a team of experts. You're getting your form looked at, you're getting your blood work looked at, you're getting expertise around emotional eating and mindset, and you're getting clinical nutrition support. Like, These are elements that you would otherwise be going in piecemeal to go and get looked at by several different experts that could then be giving you conflicting advice. And in this case, you're removing so many cooks from the kitchen and keeping it very clear, concise, with a singular focus for you.

Marilynn [00:06:43]: That's a good point.

Jordanna [00:06:45]: And so, I think this is the main reasons why you would wanna be investing in your fitness, but Mehr, Show us another way of why we wanna be having this focus.

Buying Back Your Time: Outsourcing and Decision Fatigue

Marilynn [00:06:57]: Definitely. The one I'm gonna speak about, way number 2, it's so near and dear to me because I think for a lot of women, and, and it was the same for me, I felt like I had to do it all. Mm-hmm. I just had to be in control of everything. If, if I didn't do it, it wasn't gonna get done right.

Jordanna [00:07:10]: Oh my God.

Tijana [00:07:10]: Yes.

Marilynn [00:07:10]: And I really had to let go of that. So way number 2 is about buying back your time. If you think about it, your time is your most finite resource. Okay? No matter how much you want to, you are not making more of it. And that can be a challenge, but the good news is you can actually use your time more efficiently. And the way to do that is stop spending time on things that drain you and redirect it toward things that build you. Absolutely. That's why this conversation isn't like the luxury of having more time.

Marilynn [00:07:38]: It's about, okay, let's take the time you have and strategize. So one thing that I like, again, everything that I'm going to talk about are things that I used to fight and now I'm like, bring it on. So if you think about your week and you think about the tasks that are like eating away at your time and giving you nothing back, there's lots of things you can do to streamline that. And I was at one point really shy or like, I felt almost ashamed to admit that I was doing some of these things because I thought I was gonna get judged. And now again, I'm, I'm, I'm at that point in my life where I'm like, this is exactly what working smarter, not harder is. So one thing buying back your time is grocery delivery.

Jordanna [00:08:15]: Oh my God.

Marilynn [00:08:15]: Like, this is such an easy win.

Tijana [00:08:17]: You gotta be doing it.

Marilynn [00:08:18]: With your groceries. Like if you think about the whole process of groceries, there's so much of a mental load. You're planning, you're driving, you're shopping, you're schlepping it in your cart, you're putting it on the thing to pay, and then like you gotta go home and empty. Like there's so much. I personally loathe grocery shopping. It takes up so much time. I love it. Bless you.

Marilynn [00:08:35]: I don't.

Tijana [00:08:35]: But I don't do it.

Marilynn [00:08:36]: But the thing is, whether you like it or not, it has to get done, right? So—

Tijana [00:08:39]: That's what I'm saying.

Marilynn [00:08:40]: Yeah. It buys back so much time when you get your groceries delivered, or at the very least order them, go pick them up. But it saves you that time of like going into the store and doing all those things. I know, T, you're a big advocate of this one in our community. You mentioned this one a lot to our clients.

Tijana [00:08:54]: Oh yeah. 'Cause you know what gets me too? And I used to say this, so if you think I'm being judgmental to you, I used to say too, but you know, I like to handpick my apples. I'm like, I think you can let go of that. Okay. Like, I'm sorry. Like many times it looks like someone blind picked out the peppers. 'Cause I'm like, I got the mixed colored peppers and they gave me all green ones. I'm like, you didn't even make an effort to give me good ones, but But anyway, once you find your good grocery delivery service, if it's like, you know, 95% of the time it's pretty good, that's freaking way more worth it than you spending 2 hours of your day and then being like, I'm so behind, I'm so behind.

Tijana [00:09:25]: So it's a no-brainer.

Marilynn [00:09:26]: Or not doing it because it's so daunting. And then again, you like, you don't have food ready and, and all that, or do a hybrid. I know some people who will grocery deliver all their dry goods and all that, and they'll literally just go to the grocery store for like fruits and veggies. Again, there's nuance to this, but I think you're right, T. Don't be like, oh, I can't because of this. Yes, you can.

Jordanna [00:09:45]: What I will add to this though, that is a bit of a nuance on the grocery delivery, because I don't actually do the grocery delivery. I go to the grocery store. So I'll play devil's advocate just for a second here, because I do think for most people, they should do the grocery delivery. Where I find it's valuable to be in the store is when I'm going with like Scarlet, because there's like a teaching element there. Sure. It's like, hey, Here's like how we want to build our grocery cart. Here's how we plan meals. And there's an opportunity to do that because of the age and stage that we're in.

Jordanna [00:10:17]: This is something that I do find valuable. So, um, but I love what you said about the hybrid pieces. Like you could be like, hey, our staples get ordered and delivered and go in and do like, hey, here's how we plan a meal. Here's how we look for the right fruits and veggies. Here's how we assess pricing. You know, all of those things are really valuable skills that I think can get lost in the convenience sometimes of delivery.

Tijana [00:10:37]: Costco is an experience. Like, I like Costco. Yeah.

Jordanna [00:10:40]: You just have to live it to know it.

Tijana [00:10:42]: Sometimes I'm like, I need more steps and my kids need snacks. I make them come.

Jordanna [00:10:46]: And so you go.

Marilynn [00:10:47]: That's true.

Tijana [00:10:47]: That's true.

Jordanna [00:10:47]: Yeah, same.

Marilynn [00:10:48]: But I think the reality is, and, and the reason why we're bringing this up is for a lot of women, it is a mad dash and it's either like you run in, you run out, and you're not focusing on those things, or you don't do it at all and food doesn't get prepped. So if that's kind of like your sticking point, then give it a go. See how it actually will give you more time back in your day and your week. Another one related to like the food is meal prep services or meal delivery services. So, you know, one of the pillars that we advocate for is home cooking is the default. Like we will always advocate for that. But again, sometimes you might be in a really busy season of life and ordering ready-made foods where you just have to pop them in the microwave can be a lifesaver. I know for me, there have absolutely been times where I'm like, okay, we're going into a really busy month.

Marilynn [00:11:32]: I need some help here. And so I have done that.

Tijana [00:11:34]: Yeah.

Marilynn [00:11:34]: And, you know, as Get Sculpted, we've partnered with Protein Chefs and we can leave that information in the show notes, but it's a great way. It's a very convenient way to even take care of like one of your meals per day or like one or two of your meals. You girls have done delivery service before. I know we all have.

Jordanna [00:11:50]: Absolutely.

Marilynn [00:11:51]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:11:51]: When I was in the corporate world, this was something that was super helpful for me. I would basically take one of the meals from the Monday to Friday off of my to-be-cooked Like list. And it was very helpful because I wasn't always on, like being in corporate at the executive level, I wasn't on the same schedule as everybody else in my home. So sometimes I might get home at like 8 o'clock at night, or I only have 20 minutes before I had to go do pickup or a drop-off or an activity. And you really do feel like you're getting taken care of with a completely prepped meal because the macros are there, the fiber is there, like the well-roundedness of like. The different types of vegetables that they're cooking with or the different types of proteins or the flavor is different than something you might cook yourself. And so that was like such a saving grace at that point.

Marilynn [00:12:38]: Big game changer. I know. And meal prep services have come a long way. Like I remember it was probably over a decade ago that I did my first meal delivery service and it was good, but now—

Tijana [00:12:47]: They're gourmet.

Marilynn [00:12:48]: These meals are amazing. Like some of these meals are delicious.

Tijana [00:12:52]: Did you guys know that back in the day I actually, uh, wanted to do that? Like I wanted to create my own meal service.

Marilynn [00:12:59]: I think I do remember you saying that. If you want to try it again, if you want to like, you know, just like maybe like experiment with me, we'll order from you.

Tijana [00:13:08]: I appreciate that. Absolutely. Yeah. That's a funny thing.

Marilynn [00:13:11]: You do make a mean protein ball.

Tijana [00:13:13]: I love it. That's one thing that to me is just like ingrained in my lifestyle. But yeah, I think another option too is, uh, you might discuss this, but it's like someone coming and actually like prepping for you. My girlfriend does that. Like where you, and a lot of my clients have, uh, well, a couple of them.

Jordanna [00:13:26]: I've had clients do that too.

Tijana [00:13:27]: Yeah. Someone comes to your house and I'm a really efficiency girl, right? Like, I just think it just makes a lot more sense to use the groceries you have at home and just someone comes and they're, you're like, hey, use up those veggies there, will ya? Or whatever. They have a plan. They have a menu plan, whatever they make. It doesn't even need to be fancy. It's just, they're just cooking your things for you, you know?

Marilynn [00:13:44]: Yeah. Just somebody there to do it. Yeah. That's brilliant. So moral of our story is there's, there's options when it comes to food for sure. Um, another way, and this is one of my personal favorites, is have someone come and clean your house. Honestly, the hours you spend cleaning are hours that you could spend on literally anything else.

Tijana [00:13:59]: Oh my God.

Marilynn [00:13:59]: But it could be your training, resting, honestly, even just like taking time for yourself. It's a no-brainer. I just remember like fighting this one and then I was like, why? So the girl who comes to clean my house, shout out to Mackenzie, she's unreal. Um, and again, I know you girls also do this. It's just been such a like, I can breathe. I don't have to do those things. And these people exist for a reason, like for me also, I'm supporting another small business. So I think it's brilliant.

Tijana [00:14:24]: That's what I'm saying. I absolutely despise cleaning, but I, we, you need a clean house. And like, to me, the last thing I want on a Sunday afternoon is like, let me spend 4 hours scrubbing the baseboards. It's like, no thanks. I'm never going to do that in my entire life.

Marilynn [00:14:36]: Honestly, any subscription, any service that you can use that'll remove that friction from your life is worth the investment tenfold.

Jordanna [00:14:43]: If you're thinking about what's the ROI on this, like your return on investment, like, is it really worth it for you to trade off that time? Figure out what your hourly rate is.

Marilynn [00:14:51]: 10,000%. Yeah.

Jordanna [00:14:53]: Like what is your hourly rate? And if it is equal to or more than what you would be paying somebody to come and clean your home and the time it takes them versus the time it would take you and how good of a job that is at the out, like when you're finished, then at least you're able to say, yeah, this is worthy of entering my budget and allocating the money to To get that ROI back because you're getting time, you are getting a clean home. Maybe it's cleaner than what you would do yourself.

Marilynn [00:15:23]: That's right.

Jordanna [00:15:24]: Maybe worth a trade-off in your calendar because I don't know about you, but it takes like 4+ hours to clean my house.

Marilynn [00:15:29]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:15:30]: And that's just time I could be doing something else that is going to give me so much more value back in my life.

Marilynn [00:15:36]: And it's relief. For me, it's always the relief. It's like one less thing on my to-do list.

Jordanna [00:15:39]: 100%.

Marilynn [00:15:40]: So, um, so we're all advocates of this. But one last thing before we go on to the next way is just considering something a lot of women feel, which is the guilt. And like I said, that was something that I felt because a lot of women are kind of like, oh, should I spend money on this? Or this is something I could be doing myself. We are giving you permission to let go of that.

Tijana [00:15:57]: Mm-hmm.

Marilynn [00:15:57]: That is like old programming. It has nothing to do with what's best for you as women. Like we are holding down jobs, running households, like we carry the mental load of so much. So this is like, you being so strategic and prioritizing yourself.

Jordanna [00:16:12]: Literally, how many things can you do yourself?

Marilynn [00:16:14]: Yeah, exactly.

Jordanna [00:16:15]: Like, what are your choices? Like, you only have so much time, you only have so much to allocate, so much energy to give.

Marilynn [00:16:23]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:16:23]: And so what is that list that you're willing to say, no, this is the stuff I do? Well, there's probably quite a big list of things that you can then offload.

Tijana [00:16:30]: Yeah. Yeah. Unfortunately, a lot of the time these days, women are working outside the home. And unfortunately, they're also taking on more of the domestic labor as well.

Marilynn [00:16:39]: It's like 2 jobs.

Tijana [00:16:40]: So it's like 2 jobs. So it's like, uh, when I see that dynamic, I'm like, I just can't. It's like you're doing most of the, the child raising and the cleaning, and you're still expected to contribute financially equally. So it's not 1950, right? Like things have shifted and sure, some women stay home, but just keep that in mind if you're feeling any little twinge of guilt, but yet you have birthed children, raised them, you're providing income, like girl. The least you could do for yourself is the cleaning lady. Yeah.

Jordanna [00:17:04]: Well, T, the stat is actually that women who work outside of the home are carrying, in addition to working outside the home, 73% of the mental load of that home.

Tijana [00:17:14]: Yeah, I'm not surprised.

Jordanna [00:17:15]: So this is not even in the best of relationships.

Tijana [00:17:17]: Exactly.

Marilynn [00:17:18]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:17:18]: And you're talking about where there's, you know, multiple people working and contributing at home, not to even talk about like the moms that are doing it all by themselves. That's a whole other dynamic. You're still talking about caring about 3 quarters of what is required to run the home, even with somebody who's there to support you as well. So it's a lot. And if you think it isn't, like you need to actually sit down and really reevaluate how you're managing your time and what can be taken off your plate.

Marilynn [00:17:46]: And in our community, like the women that are really thriving are not the ones doing everything and wearing like the 7,000 hats. They're the ones who are strategic about what they offload, right? And the same logic. Applies to fitness. Marilynn [00:18:24]: Ti, I'd love for you to take us through the third way that we can invest in ourselves.

Feeling Good in Your Skin: Botox, Skincare, and Style After 40

Tijana [00:18:29]: Absolutely. Okay, so this is one of my favorite ways that we can invest in ourselves, and that is how you feel in your skin, AKA looking hot. And it, this is for nobody but yourself, right? Look, my therapist said this once and I thought it was really cool that we want like 80% of our validation to come from ourselves, but it's okay to want a little bit from the 20%, right?

Marilynn [00:18:49]: Yeah, it feels good.

Tijana [00:18:50]: It's nice when people notice you look good, but we're not doing it for other people. So let's just put that out there. I love how like we kind of have this dance of, oh no, no, I'm just doing it for my health. And it's like, look, we're not saying you don't wanna be healthy, but what's the shame in saying that you wanna feel freaking amazing? And—

Jordanna [00:19:05]: Totally.

Marilynn [00:19:05]: Should be zero shame.

Tijana [00:19:06]: How you do anything is how you do everything. You can't tell me your life is not significantly better when you have a hot body. You love what you see in the mirror. You love what you see in the mirror, not some, you know, strangers rating how you feel, right? And that you are taking care of your skincare, which we'll talk about, right? Like you're, you feel like your beauty element of your life is on par with your standards. Uh, you feel confident in the outfits that you're wearing. That's really what I wanna talk about here is like, yeah, what these types of things can look like. So number one, um, something that I shamelessly invest in is Botox, filler, PRP. All of us do, right?

Marilynn [00:19:40]: Yep.

Tijana [00:19:41]: This is not something that we're whispering anymore, so. It's always funny to me when people have any stigma around this because I understand that some people feel strongly and they're like, I wouldn't do that. And I'm like, that's cool. But like—

Marilynn [00:19:50]: And that's fine.

Tijana [00:19:51]: Yeah, exactly. Like, don't, right? Like, I'm all for it. I'm like, I—

Marilynn [00:19:54]: Yeah, we're not making you.

Tijana [00:19:55]: I know, I know. I heard this that was like, I don't want to look like I'm 25 at 45. I want to look like a really good 45-year-old.

Marilynn [00:20:01]: Okay, but let me just throw this out there, okay? Because we all have great injectors. If you are going to someone who is worth their time and money, They're not going to do that. Like, you are not gonna look like you are 15 years old when you're 50. Like, for me, I just want to look fresh. I just wanna not look tired. And I mean, yes, are there people who abuse all of these things? Sure. Again, go for it. I'm not judging.

Marilynn [00:20:25]: But what we're talking about here is just doing those things that help you feel vibrant and fresh. It's not about like, let me look like I'm a teenager again, at least for me.

Tijana [00:20:33]: Oh, and it's lifestyle. Everything is lifestyle. If you're drinking wine all the time and you're skipping meals and you're barely eating, you're not eating fiber, you're not eating protein, you're not sleeping, and you're super stressed, you could do all the Botox you want, but you're not gonna feel your best. Sure. And don't even, if you're not building muscle, it's not gonna help. So again, lifestyle is the leader here. Yes, yes. But you can use these things to amplify yourself.

Tijana [00:20:53]: Yeah. Skincare. Yeah. This is interesting too. I'd love your guys' opinion.

Marilynn [00:20:56]: Oh yeah. I have strong opinions.

Jordanna [00:20:58]: I also have strong opinions on skincare.

Marilynn [00:21:00]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:21:00]: 'Cause when I turned 40, it was the tail end of the world event.

Marilynn [00:21:04]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:21:05]: And I felt I exited COVID looking literally haggard, like I had aged at least a decade. Okay. And I feel like just the Botox one and the skincare elevating those to a place where like I'm willing to make an investment in those 2 things for my face for a multitude of reasons. One, mostly because I felt better. I looked more well-rested.

Marilynn [00:21:27]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:21:27]: And my skin is already very good, but I wanted to feel glowy. Like that's how I wanted to feel. I wanted the inside to reflect on the outside and That's something that helps me feel good. And I'm also, for lack of a better word, like we're kind of in the public eye, quote unquote, in a certain way. Like we're on social media, we're with clients, we're, we're out there. And even when I was in the corporate space, your presentation to your clients or your work people, like that is creating an impression. So in that space, there, there is a bit of a return on, I'll say ROI again, like return on that investment there for you. 100%.

Tijana [00:22:07]: And there's no secret.

Jordanna [00:22:08]: Yeah.

Tijana [00:22:08]: Yeah.

Marilynn [00:22:09]: The other thing I want to bring up too is like, okay, again, like we're in our 40s. Your skin does change also. So what I was doing for skincare in my 20s will not cut it, right? Your skin needs different things now. It just does. And I also think when you talk about return on investment, I could go and buy like a bunch of crap that's cheap, but I would just be like going through it. Yeah. Because it does nothing. Whereas let me take my money and spend it.

Jordanna [00:22:32]: Smart.

Marilynn [00:22:32]: smart in a product that works, that I know is actually going to help me. To me, that is the money saver, like 10 times over. So your skin needs different things now, so act accordingly. Yeah.

Jordanna [00:22:44]: I saw the funniest thing. Um, you guys know the Golden Girls?

Marilynn [00:22:48]: Yeah.

Tijana [00:22:48]: Yes.

Marilynn [00:22:49]: Okay.

Jordanna [00:22:50]: Well, I saw this little clip of Blanche who was like, I'm 46 years old and blah, blah, blah. And I weigh this much and, you know, I do my hair and whatever. And the whole thing was, was like, oh my God, she's 46. I'm 43. I'm like, am I in my Golden Girls era? And like, I think they look so old, but we look so much younger.

Marilynn [00:23:13]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:23:13]: 100%. And I just think it speaks to the evolution of like the Golden Girls back then, the '40s were meant to be like, you're in some retirement mode and you look older and you dress older. And I think we have evolved to this place where You feel this youthfulness and you want that to reflect in your body and in your mindset and in your face. And all of that is okay and good and you should wanna tap into that.

Marilynn [00:23:39]: But I think like, again, this is a tangent we don't have to go down cuz this is like another episode entirely, but like everything has changed, right? Like for some women in their 40s, they're, hello, restarting careers. Some people are having kids for the first time. So like, I think you're totally right, but I also think like that era where like your 40s and 50s meant like, let me slow down and retire. It's just not happening for so many of us. So, oh yeah, again, yeah. Why don't I wanna be feeling my absolute best and thriving as I age? Like, I wanna keep going. So, yeah.

Tijana [00:24:08]: Well, it comes back to exactly what we're talking about is like investing in yourself. Because I remember, and again, this was my perception as a kid, but my mom had me when she was 36. Mm-hmm. And I just remember thinking when she was in her 40s, I'm like, you know, have you seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding?

Marilynn [00:24:20]: Of course.

Tijana [00:24:21]: You, you know when he is like, you're starting to look old.

Jordanna [00:24:23]: You look old. Yeah.

Tijana [00:24:26]: And so I was like, literally just, I just felt like everybody, like the whole circle of people back then. It's, it's different now. It's different now. Which is why I love also social media. It brings me to my next thing is like, I've been very into styling accounts.

Marilynn [00:24:38]: Yes.

Tijana [00:24:38]: And the funny thing is I follow a ton of wardrobe stylists and I'm never gonna wear this stuff. Not because I don't think I can rock it, but I don't go anywhere, man. I, I work at home. I, I work out at home. I go somewhere like over the weekend, these pants that I'm like, I can't believe I have these. I wore them on my 20— I wore them on my 27th birthday.

Marilynn [00:24:57]: Everything old is new again.

Jordanna [00:24:59]: It sure is.

Tijana [00:25:00]: Exactly. Well, listen, I, I heard this quote that was like, being lean is the outfit. Like when you're in shape, like everything goes better. But anyway, yeah.

Jordanna [00:25:06]: You could wear a paper bag and still look good.

Tijana [00:25:08]: You could wear a paper bag. But like what I mean is, you know, investing, you got more money now, right? Like you're, it's your season to take care of yourself. Also, if you're taking care of your body, you wanna dress it in a way that, uh, makes you feel your best. It's not about going out there and just getting Gucci for the sake of it, right? Not at all. Like, It's about like actually putting your time and effort and investing in your wardrobe that's going to make you feel your best. And then of course, my favorites as well— hair, skin, whatever makes you feel great. Jord, I know you were talking recently, you got back into the nails.

Jordanna [00:25:36]: Yes, I did. I was like—

Marilynn [00:25:38]: You joined our club. It's the best.

Jordanna [00:25:40]: I sure did. And I am— I love like the clean girl aesthetic, especially with my nails. I feel like that is my vibe. And it was like a lightning bolt went off in my brain that I was like, I feel so good after. It's like after you go to the dentist or after you like reorganize your closet or something, it's that same feeling of the instant gratification of being like, yeah, this feels good. And it gives you something that's almost like your nails are a little reminder. You see them, you use them, your hands all the time for different things. And it's like, yeah, I'm someone who takes care of myself.

Marilynn [00:26:16]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:26:16]: That's my personal association. I wouldn't judge anybody else for not having it.

Tijana [00:26:21]: But that's what it's about, right?

Jordanna [00:26:22]: But that's what it's about for me. It's that little reminder.

Marilynn [00:26:26]: I'm so happy when you did that because Ti and I, like, we love getting our nails done too. And I've been getting my nails done since I was in grade 12. That was when I started like going from, and I have not stopped. I go every 3 to 4 weeks since grade 12 and I will never stop. I told my husband, I'm like going to my grave with my nails done. So. I swear.

Tijana [00:26:45]: Oh, absolutely. Yeah. That's the thing, right?

Marilynn [00:26:47]: My happy place. So yeah.

Tijana [00:26:48]: You gotta have your thing.

Jordanna [00:26:49]: Our old age homes are gonna be so different than previous generations. They're going to have like wardrobe stylists, nail techs, Botox injectors. Oh my God. Like gyms.

Tijana [00:27:01]: I was talking to, I was talking to Brian about this. I'm like, I think old folks homes sound really good if, if there's like a solid facility, right?

Marilynn [00:27:08]: Okay. We're copywriting this right here, right now. Are we thinking—

Jordanna [00:27:10]: we should—

Marilynn [00:27:11]: I'm thinking a Get Sculpted retirement home.

Tijana [00:27:12]: That's where we're headed.

Marilynn [00:27:13]: Like that's our Um, when we go.

Jordanna [00:27:15]: Absolutely. If you guys like this idea, please let us know.

Tijana [00:27:18]: Sculpted retirement.

Jordanna [00:27:19]: We'll start planning now. Yep.

Tijana [00:27:21]: That starts now, right? So it's investing in yourself.

Marilynn [00:27:23]: Yep.

Tijana [00:27:23]: Yep. And I think a lot of the time, you know, I'll pass it over to you, Jordan, but all these things we're talking about is life passes you by. Like your kids are small and then, oh, I'll, I'll wait until they're bigger. I'll wait until this, I'll wait until that. And then you're entering your 50s, 60s, 70s and you're like, damn, like I wish I just took the time then to build these things and to invest in myself.

Marilynn [00:27:40]: One life.

Tijana [00:27:40]: one life to build the fit body. Like, it doesn't happen by accident. So, another important piece before we just yap forever, Jord, please talk to us about mental load.

Mental Load: Therapy, Mindset Coaching, and Learning to Say No

Jordanna [00:27:49]: Okay. This one is huge because just like what I said before, like, if you're carrying that 73% of the mental load of life, then some of what's weighing you down actually has nothing to do with the scale because you're so tired, you're burnt out, you have zero energy. You really actually need to work on Lightening that load in order to have the energy and the capacity and the time and the realization of where you fit into your schedule. And some of these things have been game changers for me, literally changed my life. And in some cases, I think saved my life.

Tijana [00:28:25]: Yes.

Jordanna [00:28:25]: And I will make that bold claim. And I know for you girls, it is of utmost importance as well. Taking care of your mental load is massive. The first one I'll talk about is therapy or counseling. I started this the week I went on my, my mental health leave of absence from work. And I remember my therapist, gosh, Eden, I love you.

Tijana [00:28:45]: Oh, wow. You've been with her that long?

Jordanna [00:28:46]: She literally was like, yeah, I've been with her for 7 years.

Tijana [00:28:49]: Wow.

Jordanna [00:28:50]: And I've never stopped. And she literally said to me, define an emergency. And I might've shared this story before.

Tijana [00:28:59]: It's a great story.

Jordanna [00:29:00]: Yeah. And my sense of urgency was so messed up that I was like, Oh my God, it's the email I get at 6:00 AM from my boss. It's like the presentation that somebody else dropped the ball on that I now have to finish. It's like, it's something went bad in the fridge and I have to get it, or this phone call or this email.

Tijana [00:29:16]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:29:17]: And none of that is an emergency. An emergency is literally someone in the hospital dying. And my sense of urgency, and I think as millennials, as women, we are convinced that our sense of urgency needs to be expanded to the point of Everything, everything is emergent, right?

Marilynn [00:29:35]: Yes.

Jordanna [00:29:35]: And that's not the case. And so by going into therapy, for me, this was a great opportunity to literally take, you know, an hour. I go once every other week to sit down, unpack things, to really dig into things, to dig into things from my childhood, to talk about relationships that I have, to be able to really figure out where I fit in my own life. And I know both of you have made this investment too. Like, what was that impact for you?

Marilynn [00:30:00]: Can I just say like what I've noticed now? So I've actually been in therapy since, uh, university. That's when I actually started.

Jordanna [00:30:06]: That's amazing.

Tijana [00:30:06]: Yeah.

Marilynn [00:30:07]: Yeah. And so I go weekly and there was a period of time where I was going 2 times a week. But the point I wanna make is that a lot of people, if they even look to this, look at it when they're already in crisis. And I know, Jordyn, again, you and I like have both been in that where we've, we kind of accessed it when we were in crisis, and that's great. But I think we also have to like zoom out and think about how this can be so valuable as a like preventative tool. Like you just said, unpacking things, like every day things are like weighing on you and you can perseverate on those things or you can deal with them in a healthy way. So I will say therapy should be one of the things you invest in, like absolutely. Like I don't think it should be a negotiable for anybody.

Tijana [00:30:45]: Yep. Yep.

Jordanna [00:30:46]: Love it. The second one that kind of ties into this is mindset coaching. And this is the piece that I think is really important when you are working with a coach that should be accompanying the journey. It's the identity shift. It's the peace. It's, it's looking at your limiting beliefs. It's understanding patterns that have kept you small. It's figuring out where you've overextended yourself or deprioritized your own needs that really need to be reevaluated at this stage of the game in order for you to grow.

Marilynn [00:31:14]: Yeah.

Jordanna [00:31:14]: The third one is journaling and reflection practices. These are free, they're accessible, and they are wildly underused. I even had one client do 60 seconds of mindfulness the day after her static stretches.

Marilynn [00:31:29]: Mm-hmm.

Jordanna [00:31:30]: She would set the timer and just do her, her own body scan for 60 seconds. And the way that she changed through the day for the remainder of the day was massive. She was more present, she was more aware, she could slow down her breathing, and it just really created such a pivot for her. And so, If you're not doing any of these, this is a great place to start because it is free and so accessible. And the last one also costs you nothing, learning to say no. Mary, you started this off by saying you're in your era of no.

Marilynn [00:32:02]: I have to be.

Jordanna [00:32:03]: Yes, you have to be. I think every single woman has to be at some point. And the earlier you can learn that no is a full sentence, the better off you will be. And the, the one thing I wanna drop in on as this like reframe for you is that Just because it's open time in your calendar does not mean it's available time in your calendar and that some things just should not be booked. And so if you create those boundaries for yourself, you will have less chronic stress. You'll have fewer unprocessed emotions. Like all of these things just start to play out in a better, more healthy way.

Tijana [00:32:38]: 100%. Yeah.

Marilynn [00:32:39]: And can I say one last thing before I know we're gonna move on, but you also have to remember no doesn't have to mean no forever.

Tijana [00:32:44]: Right?

Marilynn [00:32:44]: So if you're in a season of life where you're really like overstretched or you have too many commitments, No is a really good strategy to be like, it's a no right now, but let's reevaluate that. So I don't want people to think you have to be this hard person who's like, no to everything. It's just honor where you're at. Not right now, but I'll let you know when I can revisit that.

Jordanna [00:33:03]: I heard this one other like response to somebody asking this woman, hey, can you take this on or whatever? And she says, you know what? My plate is full, is as full as I like it to be right now.

Tijana [00:33:13]: Yeah, I saw that.

Jordanna [00:33:14]: And I was like, I just love that because it's Not saying that my plate is full. It's not at overbrim or overcapacity. It's just where I like it to be. And that says so much about your ability to manage your time, to be self-aware, and to be able to manage expectations of yourself. So with that, Mare, I want you to bring us home with way number 5.

Investing in Your Joy: Travel, Hobbies, and Connection

Marilynn [00:33:38]: Yeah, and this is so important. This is investing in your joy. You know, it's funny when you say the word joy, some people actually are like, What even is that? Joy is, is not a reward. It's not something you do or you get to experience when you finish all the things on your list or after you've taken care of your kids and your partner. It has to be part of your regular, it has to be an experience that you have as part of your life. And it can look different for different people. Um, a lot of the ones we're gonna quickly chat about are ones that I know I love, you guys love too, but one is travel. Like I'm at a point in my life, Oh yes.

Marilynn [00:34:08]: And I'll admit there was a point in my life where I was collecting a lot of things. I loved like shoes and purses and I don't love those things any less, trust me, but I wanna collect memories.

Tijana [00:34:16]: 100%.

Jordanna [00:34:17]: Experiences.

Marilynn [00:34:18]: Yeah. With family, with friends, whatever it is. Or even, I've done this once in my life, but even by yourself. Like, mm-hmm. Those are things that honestly, when I, and I don't wanna get philosophical here, but like honestly, when I think of the end of my life, I'm not gonna be like, wow, I'm so happy I got that purse. It's gonna be like, I'm so happy I, I had that trip with my nieces or my husband. Yeah. So absolutely travel's a big one for me.

Marilynn [00:34:36]: me. Another one comes from hobbies. These are things you do because you just, you're genuinely interested in them or you want to. I recently picked up pickleball, guys.

Jordanna [00:34:46]: I love pickleball.

Marilynn [00:34:47]: Okay. But it can be anything, pottery, gardening. Jordan, I know you, you were giving gardening a go over the summer.

Jordanna [00:34:52]: I was. Yeah.

Marilynn [00:34:53]: Okay. I love this for you. It doesn't have to make sense to anybody. It has to be just something you enjoy doing. And I would say this is something that I would say most women do not do. And I'll tell you one quick story. I had a client who retired and I was like, oh my gosh, this is so exciting because now you've got all this open time to do things you didn't do. And she literally said to me, I don't even know what was fun.

Marilynn [00:35:16]: I don't know what I do.

Tijana [00:35:16]: Exactly.

Marilynn [00:35:17]: Genuine confusion because she had never had that in her life. So anyway, we brainstormed some things, she tried it and she loved it. So hobbies are, are great. And I encourage all of you to kind of branch out and just be like, If you had a little bit of extra time, what would you wanna try?

Tijana [00:35:30]: 100%.

Jordanna [00:35:31]: You enroll your kids in all the activities, but then you ignore yourself, right?

Marilynn [00:35:36]: Such a good point.

Jordanna [00:35:37]: You know, a few years ago I was like, I'm just gonna do one activity for myself, like twice a year, like a, a fall thing and a spring thing. And I did take a pottery class and I did go and do a SUP boarding class and I'm like—

Marilynn [00:35:48]: Yeah, I remember that.

Jordanna [00:35:49]: Yeah. And it just helps you unlock, like, do I actually even enjoy this? Would I wanna do this later? It's great for your brain.

Marilynn [00:35:57]: It's using your brain in a different way, right? So I love that. And then the last one is experience joy with people in your life. So, you know, concerts, dinner with the girls, weekends away, that's investing in connection. And I can tell you, we do team days, like we do stuff with clients, which is amazing, but we do things with our coaches. We do things with one another where it's not work. It's let's go to the head spa. Let's go for a massage. Let's do something just to connect and have Fun.

Marilynn [00:36:22]: We need to have more fun. So we want you to say yes to things that light you up.

Tijana [00:36:27]: Yeah.

Marilynn [00:36:27]: Even if they cost money, if you know, they take time, there's a million other things you could be doing. Sure. But it's always worth it. And again, I know we talk about the guilt piece. Don't feel like you can't spend money on things that bring you joy. Jordan, you said it. I didn't even think of that, but it's so true. You don't think twice about finding the money and the time to bring your kids to hockey and lacrosse and swimming and dance and blah, blah, blah.

Marilynn [00:36:48]: But like, you are sitting there depleted, not giving your best self to anyone. So that's what this whole episode's been, right? Is like, this has gotta be your season of life.

Tijana [00:36:58]: Sorry. And I was gonna say with the kids thing too, they'll also be like, you gotta be brave. You gotta try something new. You gotta put yourself out there. You gotta lead from the front. You do, right? Like it's, it's time for you to try something new, you to face your fears. Like that's one thing that I, I think is really important when you have kids.

Marilynn [00:37:13]: And I've said this a million times. We have to reparent ourselves. We need to just stop sometimes and be like, what would I say to my kid? That's exactly what you need to say to yourself. What would you encourage your kid to do? That's what you gotta do.

Jordanna [00:37:23]: And this is the question I would leave you with. If your child grew up to live exactly how you live, day in, day out, your habits, your beliefs, your time, your work, would you be happy for them or would you want them to make a change?

Marilynn [00:37:39]: That's a great point.

Jordanna [00:37:40]: And if making a change is your answer, then what are you gonna do differently so that they're not living the same life as you? Because we mimic what we see.

Marilynn [00:37:49]: So powerful.

Jordanna [00:37:49]: And that's how children learn. So if that question is out there for you, like this is such a good episode to take some action on.

Closing Thoughts: Your Me Season Starts Now

Tijana [00:37:56]: 100%. Yes. All right, ladies, so let's sum it all up. We have shared 5 ways with you from how to invest in your fitness and your time, how you feel In your skin, with your mental load and your joy. And just remember that none of these things are selfish. They are actually necessary. They're not bells and whistles. And look, if you're after 40, if you're approaching 40, or if, if you're long after 40, it doesn't matter.

Tijana [00:38:20]: But you have to stop waiting for the right time because this is stuff you have to bake into your life now. It's intentional. It never falls into your lap. It's you making the choice and saying, I am putting myself on the front burner. You don't need anybody's permission. And in fact, you need to get better with flexing those boundary muscles. And it doesn't matter how anyone else feels about that. I mean, obviously you're factoring in, you know, your dynamics and whatnot, but the main thing that matters is that you are feeling fulfilled in your life, whatever that looks like for you.

Tijana [00:38:49]: So if this episode hit home for you and you're thinking, man, I know I gotta do it, I don't know how to do it, I've always put myself last, then this is what's gonna be the beginning of your me season. All right? And we want that for you. If you are ready to make the investment in yourself with your fitness and you're done putting it off until the right time, or there's no weddings, there's no birthdays, and you just know that you need to carve this out, this is exactly what we help our clients with. So we encourage you to fill out an application at getsculpted.ca/contact, and we will help you build that body and the energy and the confidence that is gonna elevate that me season for you.
