Gym Confidence and How to Walk In Even When You Don't Feel Ready

Gym intimidation is real, and it's not laziness. Learn why gymtimidation happens and how to walk into the gym with confidence, even if you don't feel ready, on this episode of Get Sculpted.

If you've ever sat in your car outside the gym, trying to convince yourself to go inside, you're not alone, and you're not weak. That feeling has a name – gymtimidation. And it's one of the most common things that keeps women from ever getting started with strength training, or from going back after time away.

In this episode, Coaches Marilynn, Tijana, and Jordanna get real about gym intimidation, what it is, why it hits so hard for women over 30, and what you can do about it. Because here's the truth: gym anxiety for beginners isn't a personality flaw. It's your brain trying to protect you from a situation that feels uncertain and unfamiliar. And once you understand that, everything starts to shift.

Here's what we cover:

  • Why gym intimidation happens, and why it can show up even after years of training when you step into a new environment

  • The confidence killers that keep women stuck: comparison, not knowing the equipment, worrying about form, and the belief that you simply don't belong

  • Why the fear of going to the gym is so consuming for women over 30, and how diet culture and body image make it so much harder to walk through that door

  • How to reframe the feeling so it stops running the show, because feeling out of place doesn't mean you don't belong, it means you're new

  • Practical first-time gym tips you can use before you ever set foot inside, including how to tour the space, warm up your brain, and build a plan B before you need it

  • The reset protocol for when things go sideways mid-workout (because they sometimes will) and that's completely okay

  • Why confidence doesn't come before action –it comes because of action. And how having a structured workout plan for beginners changes everything

This episode is for the woman who keeps putting off going to the gym because she doesn't know what she's doing, doesn't feel like she belongs, or compares herself to a version of herself from 10 years ago. You belong there. You always did.

“The heaviest weight you'll ever lift in the gym is the weight of the front door. The moment you've opened that door is the moment you've already done the hardest part” -Coach Jordanna

The unedited podcast transcript for this episode of the Get Sculpted podcast follows:

INTRO: What is Gymtimidation and Why Does It Matter?

Marilynn: Welcome back to the Get Sculpted Podcast. I'm really excited for today's conversation because we're talking about something that shows up for a lot of women, especially when they are trying to get into a new fitness routine or they're getting back to the gym after being away for a while. What we're talking about is that buildup you feel before you even step foot inside the gym... All of those thoughts are going through your head and suddenly the gym feels like the last place on earth you wanna be... So what we're talking about today is gymtimidation. This is that fear of not belonging, not knowing what to do, being judged, and it can hit you before you walk in, but it can also spike in a very bad way once you get inside.

WHY GYMTIMIDATION HAPPENS

Marilynn: It can feel like you're walking into a space that is performative, right? Where you're comparing yourself to like the 20-somethings... Anytime you feel that there's kind of like that gap between where you are and the people who are there are at— Ti, has that ever happened to you?

Jordanna: Ultimately it comes down to the fact that you're trying to not be embarrassed and you have some level of uncertainty... You don't have the evidence yet that you feel like you belong in that space... You want to really help you navigate through that because the gym is supposed to be a place that everyone belongs, that everyone can go into, that everyone can feel safe to go in and move their bodies in a positive way.

THE CONFIDENCE GAP: Why You Feel Like You Don’t Belong

Marilynn: I think what it is here, it's a confidence gap, right?... It absolutely is a real thing for a lot of women at all different ages and stages. And I think for a lot of women, you know, 35, 40 plus, it also can feel like you're walking into a space that is performative, right? Where you're comparing yourself to like the 20-somethings. You might even be comparing yourself to your younger self...

OVERCOMING GYMTIMIDATION: Practical Action Steps

Jordanna: The goal is not actually zero anxiety... The goal is actually to do it even though the anxiety is present and to learn how to sit in the discomfort of that... This is like your quick action steps if you are facing this yourself. Like you wanna name it. This is gym intimidation I'm feeling... You want to shrink the task that you're having to tackle, which is go in and do the workout. You're gonna be thinking to yourself, I'm not here to be impressive…

Tijana: Like you do you and you are allowed to learn in public. Have that permission, have that mindset going in to be like, I don't have to be perfect. I can learn as I go...

TOP CONFIDENCE KILLERS AND HOW TO REFRAME THEM

Marilynn: Most of the insecurity that women feel around the gym comes down to two things... The first one is comparing yourself... The reframe here is that you're not behind. You're actually, you're either rebuilding from experience or you're building this new phase for yourself and you can come back even stronger…

Tijana: I truly do believe that most people in the gym actually, number one, don't really think about other people, but when they do, they think positive…

Marilynn: Second confidence killer is the belief that you are weak or that you don't belong. But the gym is literally the place where you go to get stronger, right? No one is born strong. The reframe here is that you belong in the gym because you're showing up, you are learning, you are gaining strength…

Marilynn: Third confidence killer is the feeling of not knowing how to use the equipment or being unfamiliar... The reframe here is you don't have to know everything... Most gyms will actually allow you to take a tour…

Marilynn: The final confidence killer is worrying about form and that you're doing things properly... The reframe is that you are allowed to learn and make mistakes...

BUILDING CONFIDENCE: Action Comes Before Comfort

Marilynn: The confidence you want to feel does not come before action. It comes because of action. The easiest way to take action and kind of feel a little bit of relief is to have a plan...

PRACTICAL STRATEGIES: How to Start Your Gym Journey With Confidence

Tijana: Think about it like the first day at a new school... The first thing is like you, you gotta have a plan... You wanna know what you're doing when you get there... Take a gym tour... Definitely have your tunes on... Listen to this episode again and again. We got you... If mid-workout, things happen, take a breath, if an emergency happens, just moment by moment...

RESET PROTOCOL: Managing Anxiety and Overwhelm in the Moment

Tijana: This is a good little reset protocol. So you could just take in that deep breath, 4-second inhale and a 6-second exhale very slowly... You can just remind yourself like, I'm learning and I'm focused. I'm here to grow. I'm not here to be perfect...

RECAP & FINAL ADVICE: You Absolutely Belong in the Gym

Marilynn: Our feelings are not always facts, but nonetheless, you might be feeling this gym intimidation and it can feel very paralyzing at times... Your plan becomes your anchor that you can lean into... Remind yourself you're not behind, you are not weak, you are not too old... If you're ready for support and creating that clear plan for you and having accountability so you're not doing it alone, this is what we want to help you with...

TEASER FOR NEXT EPISODE & OUTRO

Marilynn: If you wanna get rid of this gym intimidation feeling and you're ready to build that strength, we've got some coaching spots opening up... Thank you for listening as always, and we will see you in the next episode where we have a fabulous guest... It's a goodie. So we'll see you next week.
