If you've been doing everything right, the workouts, meal prep, cardio, and your belly still won't budge, this episode is going to change how you think about the whole thing. Because a flat stomach isn't just an abs problem, and it's definitely not a willpower problem. There are five specific things working against you, and most women have never been told what they really are.

In this episode, Coaches Jordanna, Tijana, and Marilynn break down the reasons your midsection isn't responding the way you want it to, and why crunches, waist trainers, and cutting carbs will never get you there. They walk through the five keys to a flat stomach year-round: what has to happen first, what most women are completely skipping, and how everything from your posture to your digestion plays a bigger role than you'd think.

Here's what we cover:

  • Why you can’t spot reduce belly fat, and what you need to address first before anything else will work

  • How belly fat distribution shifts during perimenopause as estrogen decreases, and why your midsection may have changed even when nothing else did

  • The difference between your surface abs and your deep core muscles, and why training one without the other is leaving you stuck

  • Why crunches are not a core workout, and what functional deep core exercises create stability, reduce lower back pain, and change how your midsection looks and feels

  • How building more lean muscle boosts your metabolism, creates shape in your midsection, and works for you even when you're doing nothing

  • Why progressive overload strength training is non-negotiable for women over 35 who want to hold onto the muscle they have

  • The posture piece that nobody talks about, including anterior pelvic tilt, rib flare, and how simply standing differently can make your belly appear flatter without losing a single pound

  • What new moms experience with posture shifts from carrying and holding babies, and how correcting those imbalances changes the whole picture

  • How poor digestion creates visible bloating that has nothing to do with body fat, and the simple daily habits that make a real difference

  • Why cortisol and stress impact both digestion and fat distribution, and what moves the needle when it comes to managing both

This episode is for the woman who has been putting in the effort and still feels like she's missing something. The one who's done the ab circuits, worn the waist trainer, cut the carbs, and still doesn't understand why her belly won't cooperate. What the coaches want you to know is this: it's not that you're not working hard enough. It’s that no one has ever handed you the full picture.

"A flat stomach is a body fat conversation before it's even about an abs conversation. You need to be looking at your protein, your progressive overload, your training, and a sustainable deficit that's going to allow you to be in it long enough to be effective." — Coach Jordanna

The unedited podcast transcript for this episode of the Get Sculpted podcast follows:

Jordanna [00:00:01]: Welcome back to another episode of Get Sculpted. I'm Jordanna here with Tijana and Marilynn, and we have got a great episode for you today. Let me set the scene a little here for you before we do, because we've heard it time and time again. A lot of women want to have a flatter stomach, not just for a moment in time, but for all year round.

Picture this for a moment: You're doing all the workouts. You're watching what you eat. You're not skipping the gym.

Jordanna [00:00:28]: And yet, every single morning, you look in the mirror and your belly's still the thing that you just can't figure out. You've done crunches, you've cut the carbs. Maybe you've even worn one of those silly waist trainers. And nothing has given you that flat, tight stomach that you're working so hard for. You're putting in the effort. It's one of the most common frustrations that women have when they reach out to us. And today we're diving into the depths of this conversation. Here is what nobody's telling you.

Jordanna [00:00:55]: A flat stomach all year round is not about doing more because you're already doing so much. It's about understanding what's going on beneath the surface and addressing the right things in the right order. So today, we're breaking down the five keys to a flat stomach year round. And I promise you, by the end of this episode, you are going to look at your belly completely differently.

So the five keys that we're going to be covering today are:
Body fat
Your deep core muscles
Why you need more muscle
Your posture
Digestion

Jordanna [00:01:29]: And the fifth one is going to be about digestion. So, girls, are you ready for this?

Tijana: I love this one.

Marilynn: Me too.

Tijana: Let's talk about it.

KEY #1: Why Body Fat is the Foundation for a Flat Stomach

Jordanna [00:01:37]: Okay, so the first one we're diving into is body fat. The truth is, in order to have that flat stomach that you're picturing on your body, you cannot spot reduce. Like, you can't just isolate reducing fat from your belly alone. That needs to be said clearly first and foremost, because that still seems to be a little pervasive. People are like, can't I just get rid of my belly fat? And it's like...fat doesn’t come off that way.

Tijana [00:02:06]: And fat distribution is different based on your genetics and hormones. Hormones, as they shift, that changes. I know. We'll talk about that.

Jordanna [00:02:14]: Exactly. So a flat stomach is a body fat conversation before it's even about an abs conversation. You need to know that in order to start, you have to be in a fat loss phase. You need to be looking at your protein, progressive overload training, and a sustainable deficit that's gonna allow you to be in it long enough to be effective and to reduce your body fat. The layer on top of that, which is perimenopause, a lot of you might be going through right now. As estrogen decreases, body fat starts to move away from the thighs and bum and into the belly area. And that's why most women are like, hey, this changed. It feels like overnight.

But this isn't about being perfect. It's about being consistent with the right inputs over an adequate amount of time to bring the body fat percentage down so you can move on to the next piece.

Tijana [00:03:28]: This is, I think, what you need to hear: a lot of women have more body fat to lose than they think to get as lean as they want. It's not a morally good or bad thing. It's just...I've seen so many women who are like, I don't really care about the weight, I just want a flat stomach. But if your fat tends to deposit around your midsection, we can't make it magically come off only there. You gotta get lean enough everywhere so that you're getting that lean midsection.

Jordanna [00:04:06]: And this is why this is the first step. You have to address that first. It's the main step.

KEY #2: The Power of Deep Core Muscles

Marilynn [00:04:16]: Key number two, we're gonna talk about deep core muscles. There's essentially two layers to your core. The layer you can see on the surface—those are your surface muscles. When you see someone with a defined six pack, that's what we're talking about. Then there are your deep core muscles underneath. These are the muscles stabilizing your spine and pelvis.

Most women have spent years doing crunches trying to get a six pack, but they've ignored the deep core. And this is where frustration builds because they're doing all these things, and their midsection is still so soft, or they have back pain. They've spent so much time training the outer layer without developing the deep core.

Marilynn [00:05:30]: But more than that, it's not going to get you the change you want, because crunches train your surface muscles to flex, but they're not reaching or teaching those deep muscles to brace and support.

Tijana [00:05:40]: There's also a difference between an ab workout and a core workout. Those ab blasting circuits are not blasting anything. Working your abdominal muscles helps your posture and stabilizing you. But if you have belly fat, those crunches won't get rid of it.

Marilynn [00:06:09]: So what exercises are effective for the deep core? Functional dead bugs, diaphragmatic breathing, learning how to brace properly—those are key. For me, focusing on these completely changed how my body felt and moved. It wasn't about getting a six pack, it was about training my deep core muscles so I could stabilize under load and move pain free.

Tijana [00:07:06]: Your core works as a system. Often, physio approaches break things into silos, like just pelvic floor or just breathing, but everything works together. We bridge that for our clients.

Marilynn [00:07:37]: When someone has a weak deep core, they almost never relate it back to the things they're experiencing, like belly fat, chronic lower back pain, or poor posture. Working the deep core is foundational. When you do that work, things change—not just visually, but in how you move and feel, too.

KEY #3: Why You Need More Muscle for a Flat Stomach

Marilynn [00:08:19]: Building more muscle is one of the most powerful things you can do for a flat, defined midsection. Think of your muscles as a metabolic engine: the more lean muscle you carry, the more calories your body burns at rest. It primes your body to work for you—even when you're doing nothing. Plus, muscle creates shape, giving your midsection a tighter, flatter, more defined appearance—even before major weight loss occurs.

Marilynn [00:09:25]: It's also crucial to remember: muscle mass decreases as you age. Women over 35 lose muscle every year if they aren't actively training to keep it. If you've been doing the same workouts with the same weights, you're losing muscle, not building it, leading to a softer look and feel in your midsection.

And that fear about getting bulky from lifting heavy? You're not going to get bulky. Visible, functional muscle takes consistent, intentional work over years, not weeks or months.

Tijana [00:10:41]: Or without intention.

Marilynn [00:10:42]: So it's not going to happen lifting the same 10 pound dumbbells. There's a difference between working out and training with intention, which is what you need for this kind of change.

KEY #4: How Posture Impacts Your Midsection

Tijana [00:11:39]: Your posture—how you stand and your muscle imbalances—directly impacts your aesthetics and your lifts. If you have a weak core, that can make posture worse. Daily habits, like sitting at a desk and typing, lead to rounded shoulders and lack of core activation.

Take rib flare, for example: when your ribs are flaring, your abdominal muscles aren't engaged, and you're not breathing correctly to depress your rib cage toward your pelvis. This misalignment affects your posture and the effectiveness of your training.

Jordanna [00:13:18]: This is especially noticeable with newer moms. The way you hold your body—with that pelvic tilt—can literally push your belly forward. Over time, correcting posture helps correct this and can flatten your belly with no change in body fat.

Tijana [00:14:18]: Correcting imbalances and being more mindful of your body in space creates more balance in your strategy. There’s no such thing as a perfect posture, but you can always make improvements as you become more aware.

KEY #5: How Digestion and Stress Are Linked to a Flat Stomach

Tijana [00:14:42]: Digestion is a huge factor in how your stomach looks. We just did an episode on this, so go back and listen, but poor digestion can lead to major bloating, making you look and feel like you have a belly even if you're lean. For example, eating too quickly, not chewing food well, or having too much processed food can all impact how flat your stomach looks.

Hydration, fiber, slowing down, and focusing on your nervous system all support good digestion. Keep most of your food single-ingredient and eat mindfully. And remember, stress (and cortisol) matters—not because it magically makes you gain body fat, but because it can affect your eating patterns and fat distribution.

Long story short: managing these will help keep your stomach looking its best.

RAPID FIRE: Biggest Mistakes and Best Habits For a Flat Stomach

Tijana [00:16:59]: Alright, little rapid fire to finish things off. What is one thing women do that they think is helping their belly but is actually working against them?

Jordanna [00:17:10]: Crunches.

Marilynn: Same!

Tijana: And the next one: What's one non-negotiable you personally do to keep your core strong and stomach feeling and looking its best?

Marilynn [00:17:28]: For me, it's deep core activation and consistent heavy strength training.

Jordanna [00:17:48]: For me, it was getting into pelvic physio and improving food quality.

Tijana [00:18:10]: Prioritizing sleep and stress management for sure.

RECAP & FINAL ADVICE

Jordanna [00:18:31]: Let's bring this all home with a summary wrapped up in a bow. The five keys to a flat stomach all year round are:
  • Body fat is the foundation. You cannot spot reduce, and you cannot out train a nutrition problem.
  • Deep core: the real work under the surface; crunches aren't going to get you there.
  • Muscle: creates the shape you want, boosts your metabolism, and keeps your midsection tight and defined.
  • Posture: aligning your pelvis and core can create a visible difference, even without losing a single pound.
  • Digestion: hydration, fiber, eating slowly, chewing thoroughly, and managing stress are not bonus steps—they are key elements.
  • If you've been working on all five of these and still feel something is missing, that's what we're here for. We can zoom out and zoom into each area to figure out what the missing piece is for you.
