Fat Loss Isn't the Finish Line, Here's What it is
Learn why fat loss is just the starting point and how building a real fitness foundation is the key to sustainable results and lasting transformation for women on this episode of Get Sculpted.
If you've been doing all the things, losing weight, getting motivated, going hard, only to find yourself right back at square one again, this episode is your wake-up call. Not the kind that makes you feel guilty, but the kind that finally makes things make sense. The reason you keep restarting is a foundation problem. And until you build one, you'll keep trying to decorate the rooms before you've poured the concrete.
In this episode of Get Sculpted, Coaches Marilynn, Tijana, and Jordanna are kicking off Part 1 of a brand new 3-part series walking you through their signature Strength Sculpting System, the exact framework they use with every single client to move them from short-term results that never last to a fit life they maintain. Today it's all about the Foundations Phase: what it is, why so many women skip it (even the experienced ones), and what it takes to build sustainable fat loss that sticks.
Here's what we cover:
Why fat loss is not the finish line, but the foundation, and why reframing this one belief changes everything about how you approach your health and fitness
The real reason you keep falling off and restarting, and why it has nothing to do with motivation or discipline
Why you can't build lasting results on a broken foundation, and what it looks like to fill the cracks, no matter how much experience you already have
How the Foundations Phase creates the identity shift that takes you from "woman always on a diet" to "woman who just lives this way"
Why structure isn't restrictive, it removes decision fatigue and makes consistency feel effortless
The training basics that most women skip or underestimate: progressive overload, lifting form, tracking your lifts, and why more variety is not better
Why you're never too advanced to go back to foundations, and what happens when you try to skip this phase anyway
The nutrition work that happens in this phase: portion awareness, protein targets (25–35g per meal, 3–4 times daily), hydration, and planning ahead as a form of self-respect
How decades of diet culture, the fat-free '90s, the all-or-nothing mindset, and the quick fix mentality have disconnected you from your hunger and fullness cues, and how this phase helps you rebuild that
Why women in perimenopause experience worse energy crashes when they're not nourishing themselves properly, and what to do about it
The difference between fat loss and weight loss, and why having realistic expectations about the pace of fat loss protects your results
Why the foundations phase is something even the most advanced women return to when life shifts their season
This episode is for the woman who keeps starting over and blaming herself every time. You're not the problem. You've just never been shown what a real foundation looks like, and that's exactly what this series is here to change.
“Fat loss is not the finish line. It is the foundation and the starting point that's gonna launch you into keeping your results for life.” -Coach Marilynn

Why Foundations Matter for Lasting Fitness Transformation
Marilynn [00:00:00]: Hello and welcome back to the Get Sculpted podcast. We are in a new month and with that we are very excited, not just because here in Ontario we are getting closer to spring and the milder weather, but because we're kicking off something that we've actually never done on our podcast before. This episode is part 1 of a 3-part series where we're gonna walk you through our signature strength sculpting system. And this is the exact system that we take our clients through when we move them from short-term changes that never last to results and lasting transformation.Marilynn [00:00:35]: You start a plan, you're motivated, you do well, but then you can't keep up. You fall off, you feel guilty, and then you restart or jump to the next new thing. That cycle is gonna end here, and that's why we're so excited to get into this.
FOUNDATIONS PHASE: The Secret to Sustainable Fat Loss
Marilynn [00:00:54]:Inside our Strength Sculpting System, there's actually a series of phases that you go through, and each one builds on the one before it. So today it's all about the first phase, which we call the Foundations phase, and this is typically anywhere from 16 to 24 weeks of your journey. The Foundations phase is where everything begins, and just like the name would suggest—Foundations—this phase sets the tone for everything.Marilynn [00:01:16]: Honestly, I would say that this phase is actually what determines whether you build lasting results or you fall back into that same loop... The reason why so many of you feel like it gets harder and harder every time you restart is because you're trying to get to this next level without building the foundation. You never actually take the full journey.
RETHINK THE GOAL: Fat Loss Isn’t the Finish Line
Marilynn [00:01:36]:So today we're gonna do some reframing. Newsflash: We need you to start looking at fat loss as the beginning, not the end. Most women go their whole lives thinking that once they reach that number on the scale, they're done.Jordanna [00:02:04]: Like, what was beyond fat loss? What was beyond meeting the number at the scale? Absolutely nothing... The industry has done such a disservice to women everywhere because the belief is like, you don't continue making money off of women when they're strong, confident in their best physique possible. So to keep them stuck in small is like, why would you teach them what's beyond fat loss?
Tijana [00:02:49]:Yeah, it's very true. I thought there was always more fat to lose... there was never really any concept to me that what is beyond that.
Marilynn [00:03:36]: Fat loss is not the finish line. It is the foundation, and it's where you reset your habits, patterns, beliefs, all of these things that actually have been keeping you stuck.
BUILDING HABITS: Structure, Routines, and Identity Shifts
Marilynn [00:04:29]:The foundation phase is not just about changing your body... It's actually changing your patterns because you can't transform your body until you transform the habits and mindset that keep pulling you back to where you were.Tijana [00:05:09]: We don't want occasionally great. We want consistently good.
Marilynn [00:05:29]: The more structure you give the brain, the easier habits are gonna become because you stop relying on willpower... In real life, in the foundation phase, our clients are building routines around meal prep, batch cooking, being consistent with workouts, scheduling them in, making all of these things a non-negotiable.
Jordanna [00:07:02]: Sometimes that's almost a disservice because you come with experience and there's sometimes these blocks where it's like, Oh, I followed macros before, or I already know how to do this, I already have the habits in place. And it's like, but you really don't, because something is missing as to why you haven't gotten to the goal.
[00:08:28]: A lot of people who do have experience, sometimes when we kind of talk about this, they're like, I, I think I could skip that whole thing. I'm like, right, but, but you just shared with me, like, your thing is not that you haven't lost weight... You can't build on a rickety foundation.
TACTICAL TIPS: How to Build Your Fitness Foundation
Marilynn [00:10:21]: We always wanna make this tactical... Just to kind of leave you with a few things, and this, these are kind of our basics that we keep coming back to. One is about your movement, your workouts. We really encourage you schedule them... Another one is set up a routine... But essentially you're planning what does next week look like? Make fitness the focal point and shape your life around that.Marilynn [00:11:08]: Track your habits, not just your weight... Here is also where you collect data about your habits, about your workouts, your protein, your hydration, your lifts, things like that.
[00:11:47]: That Friday meeting is a non-negotiable for me... What do you have to say no to in order to be able to prioritize yourself? That is a practice and it doesn't go away just because you know how to do it. You have to keep doing it.
[00:12:21]: If you're not building the kind of momentum you want, it's because you haven't stayed true to these foundational habits, and myself included... I know that if I don't stick to my routines that work for me, and that's okay cuz we're human, but I know that that's the reason. And you wanna always use that as your north star.
TRAINING: Why Smart Strength Training Is Essential
Tijana [00:12:58]: A lot of people say, I've done strength training before and it's like, okay, great. You've been active for quite some time. What has that looked like? Has it been self-led? Mostly, yes... You're still not spending your time right now in the most optimal way to lead to results. There's a huge difference between just sweating and training properly.Tijana [00:14:10]: We need to focus on like, are you getting full range of motion, full stretch?... If you've just been doing self-guided, self-guided, self-guided, you're on a hamster wheel, you're in your head, you're doing the workouts in your living room, there's absolutely no feedback loop, then you're doing the, the wrong thing if you're not getting results for years and years.
Jordanna [00:15:51]: I particularly wanna reference the women who have worked with a lot of coaches before, because when you will initially get a program within our world, you might look at it and be like, oh, this might look a little too easy, or this might look a little too short, or I've done this before, how is this different.
(/speakers/C) [00:17:10]: If you're not looking in the mirror and saying, yep, I am ripped Miss Olympia level here, then there's room to grow.
NUTRITION: Building a Healthy Relationship with Food
Jordanna [00:20:26]: Our relationship with food is going to be very foundational, not just to how we lose weight, but how we fuel ourselves long-term... How you lose weight is determined by how you nourish yourself. How you look at that weight is determined by how you train.Jordanna [00:21:55]: You can't keep doing the same thing to elicit a different result. You need to be able to be open to change…
[00:22:09]: You hit the nail on the head. It's not about a free-for-all for your macros. It's not about cutting foods out either, but by and large, we're still prioritizing those whole food satisfying meals.
Jordanna [00:22:53]: From that eating psychology perspective, it really is about tuning into the fact that if you're going into a fat loss phase, which most people are in their foundation phase, it's really learning about tapping into those hunger and fullness cues... It's learning about how to nourish yourself instead of punishing yourself.
Jordanna [00:26:31]: Like you still need the basics of plain old water... And the last piece here is planning ahead. This is so important. And this is where I think I really wanna reframe the element of being disciplined or having willpower. To—this is actually how you learn how to prioritize yourself, is planning ahead.
RECAP: Commit to Foundations for Transformation
Marilynn [00:28:17]: As we wrap up today's episode, we want you to walk away understanding that foundations is where you stop trying to be good for just a few weeks. You start becoming the kind of woman who stays consistent no matter what life throws at you…Marilynn [00:29:00]: Fat loss is not the finish line... Fat loss is the foundation and the starting point that's gonna launch you into keeping your results for life.
